The Dymaxion designed by Buckminster Fuller had its first showing on July 12, 1933. The innovative Fuller invited a large number of dignitaries in the unveiling outside his Bridgeport, Connecticut factory. Included on the list were Amelia and Sir Kingsford Smith. The three-wheeled Dymaxion’s test runs around the track proved successful, so much so that Amelia asked Fuller for permission to use the car as her official vehicle during festivities at the White House. Having set a transcontinental record on July 8, she would be a guest of the Roosevelt’s the following week to attend a celebration for her accomplishment. The publicity would benefit Fuller’s concept car and ensure that Amelia captured the attention of the press in support of Fuller’s projected use of the Dymaxion – a vehicle to function on land and in the air.
