Most interesting was how Amelia promoted her hats. She awarded a hat to a licensed Ninety-Nine member who made the most landings in any given month. Points were assigned as follows: 1 point - landing at an airport; 2 points - a forced landing in any pasture without damage; 3 points - if cows were in the pasture.
Augusta Roberts of the New York-New Jersey section of the Ninety-Nines won the first hat in March 1934. According to The 99er Magazine, "One of these good-looking Stetson hats designed by Miss Earhart is available for the winner each month. It all depends on how many different airports you are landing in during the month. Application blanks and details of the contest may be secured from the 99er editor."
