In 1931, Julian was known to be a member of the nation’s first black precision flying troupe – the Five Blackbirds. William J. Powell and James Herman Banning started the troupe in 1929 after founding the Bessie Coleman Aero Club at Los Angeles’ Eastside Airport. Powell included Julian in his flying act until he realized that the flamboyant Julian was nothing more than a scam artist and an incompetent pilot. In contradiction to Powell’s assessment of Julian’s flying skills, he became the first black pilot to fly the Atlantic. The flight took place in 1929. In 1935, the newspapers ran an article on Julian, heralded as the “Black Eagle” of Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie’s Air Force.
